Potong Pasir is not the first area that comes to mind when one thinks of new cafes, with an average of just one cafe opening per year, namely Kizuna in 2020 and Juparo in 2021. Rise has rise-n to the occasion by being the latest entrant to the nascent Potong Pasir cafe scene. Situated in a HDB estate, Rise with its peach-coloured, highly-instagrammable façade sticks out like a rose among the thorns of provision shops, coffeeshops and hair salons.

Rise stands out in the HDB estate with its attractive storefront

Although only about a week old, Rise was packed on a weekday afternoon with demographics ranging from child-toting adults, working professionals with laptops, to young couples seeking out new experiences. It was not difficult to see what draws in the crowds — the first sight greeting customers is an attractive counter brimming with a myriad of baked goods and gelati (trivia: gelati is the plural tense of gelato).

Rise amalgamates various influences in its interior design such as an industrial-themed counter, Balinese rattan chairs, pastel coat of paint, and pampas decorations, culminating in a cosy, pleasant environment to while the afternoon away.

Clearly lots of thought has gone into the aesthetics of the cafe — an essential aspect of the cafe dining experience apart from the food/drinks.

Pampas features heavily in this cafe, providing a soothing/calming effect.

It is rare for a cafe to offer a full array of baked goods AND gelato, but Rise somehow manages to achieve this feat, with 12 gelati flavours being offered.

The array of gelati

The mind-boggling array of baked goods jostling for attention made the selection process challenging as everything looked equally attractive. I was torn among the Yuzu Lemon Teacake, Raspberry Teacake, and Pistachio Honeycomb Cake. As an amateur baker myself, I was capable of baking my own Teacakes, but the Pistachio Honeycomb Cake required a higher level of skill, so that was how I eventually decided on it.

The Pistachio Honeycomb Cake (S$7.20) was like a beautiful work of art comprising several layers and components, topped with actual pistachio bits. As a fan of pistachio, this cake easily won me over. The pistachio taste was clearly discerning whilst not being too overpowering, and the honeycomb topping served as coherent icing on the cake.

No cafe experience is complete without some coffee. To that end, I ordered the Flat White (S$5.50), which was served with beautiful latte art and a biscotti.

All in all, Rise ticks all the checkboxes of a good cafe — attractive and tasty baked goods, coffee with delicate latte art, and a gorgeous interior. I could see myself making return visits to try out its other interesting baked goods. Rise is certainly a welcome addition to the otherwise-sleepy Potong Pasir neighbourhood.

Rise scores well on all fronts — be it food, drinks or aesthetics.
